Can Brain Tumors Be Caused by Cellphone Usage?
I use my cellphone on a daily basis, like I'm sure all others do, and it's not unusual for me to make a call to someone outside of text messages. I never thought much about the impact of using my cellphone because I didn't think it warranted ground for discussion. However, there seems to be a couple of accusations against these mobile phones in terms of a possible link to brain tumors. One has to wonder just how accurate this claim is, though.
A news story was posted on Fox News' website a little under one month ago that told about an Italian court ruling that a businessman's benign brain tumor came about due to cellphone usage. The reported cellphone usage amounted to about six hours a day for 12 years, which resulted in the said tumor. While the lawyer had doctors testify on behalf of the client, there still isn't much in the way of a solid correlation. As of now, there's no clear link to be seen, but the World Health Organization claims that cellphones could be potential carcinogens.
It seems like the cause for these tumors hinge on the fact that there are so many people worldwide who believe cellphones are the problem. However, so many people assume that this is the case when there is no clear evidence to be shown. For example, Sheryl Crow was diagnosed with one of many worldwide benign brain tumors that strike people seemingly out of nowhere. Even though Crow believes that the excessive use of her cellphone brought it about, there is still no scientific proof to back the claim. Organizations such as Voices Against Brain Cancer say that there is no clear cause for the formation of these tumors.
Even if there was validity to back this claim up, I would insist that these tumors would only form through excessive usage of the phone like the Italian businessman was sadly stricken by. I'm sure that standard usage of the phone would be okay and there would be no physical repercussions for it. I only use my phone to make calls in the most necessary of times; I text people back and forth if I don't have to, like I'm sure many others do. The possibility of tumors forming depends on the amount of time you decide to chat with an active phone at your head.
As of now, there is no clear link to be seen connecting cellphone usage with the development of brain tumors. For many people, this is a good thing because I'm sure that some fear existed for those who constantly utilize these devices in everyday life. For others, however, it may infuriate them because there is still no clear cause for these tumors. I cannot blame them at all and my only hope is that research brings about new information soon.
